An island first. Then another?

Choose São Miguel for crater lakes and a settled first trip, or build a central-island holiday around Pico, Faial and São Jorge. Start with the island, not a nine-stop checklist.

How much island-hopping fits?

Count usable days on land before choosing how many islands to visit. One island is a complete holiday; another needs a reason and a workable connection.

Island order is a planning choice, not a timetable. Check current routes and dates before fixing stays.

Let one island be the trip

São Miguel brings Sete Cidades, Lagoa do Fogo and the Furnas valley onto one island. A week here can leave room for a city day, separate west and east excursions, and a second attempt when cloud hides a lake. That week is our suggested pace, not a minimum stay.

A transfer is part of the holiday, not a gap in it

Check departure and arrival ports or airports, the journey back, local transfers and baggage before paying for the next stay. Keep a separate recovery day before an important flight where possible; that reduces exposure but cannot guarantee a connection. A rental car also needs the hire company’s permission before any ferry crossing.

Build a workable island-hopping sequence

Before adding another island

Pick one anchor island

Write down the places you most want to see. If they are all on São Miguel, an extra island is optional.

Price the whole move

Include accommodation changes, terminal transfers and any separate local car hire, not just the fare.

Protect the journey home

Do not make a remote island excursion the only bridge to a fixed international departure. Check alternatives and ticket conditions.
